In Ethiopia one of the traditional methods that is always used for conflict resolution is the use of a Coffee Ceremony. The coffee ceremony is considered to be the most important social occasion in many villages, and it is a sign of respect and friendship to be invited to a coffee ceremony. Guests at a ceremony may discuss all kinds of topics. However, often the ceremony is used to mediate or reconcile two or more groups who are at odds for various reasons. The mediation is often organized and led by elders. While the coffee is brewed and served, in a lengthy but highly organized manner.

The elders start the hearing, giving those involved a chance to speak. Coffee is often served by young women wearing traditional clothes. After hearing from all sides, the elders start the reconciliation process. They always try to balance their verdict and for this reason their effort usually ends in success. Any group that rejects the verdict will be socially outcasted. The Association plans to use the same coffee ceremony and the help of elders in our community to bring members together, invite other communities for cultural exchanges share traditions and promote the mainstream Canadian culture.
